Grant Policies

The Joanna Foundation makes grants only to organizations qualifying as tax-exempt under the Internal Revenue Code and not classified as private foundations.

The Foundation does not make loans or provide grants, scholarships or fellowships to individuals. Grant funds may not be used for lobbying or political purposes. Proposals that demonstrate the support of other grantmakers are encouraged.

The Foundation discourages recurring-type grants and does not accept unsolicited requests for multi-year commitments.

Funding focuses on specific areas in South Carolina. Eligible organizations should be located within or demonstrate significant impact in at least one of the following areas: Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester Counties and the communities of Newberry, SC, and Joanna, SC.

The Foundation will consider requests for:

  • Seed money
  • Special projects
  • Matching funds
  • General operations
  • Technical/administrative support
  • Capital campaigns

In general, the Foundation does not make grants for:

  • Debt reduction
  • Research projects
  • Direct support to individuals
  • Conferences, symposia, or publications
  • Tickets, tables, or advertising for fundraising events
